What Is an Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio?

Most people know omega-3 is "good for you." Far fewer people have ever heard of the ratio that actually determines whether their omega-3 intake is doing anything meaningful — the balance between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in the body.

Two families, one balance

Omega-6 and omega-3 are both essential fatty acids — your body needs both, and can't produce either on its own. The issue isn't that one is "bad" and the other "good." The issue is proportion. These two families compete for the same enzymes in the body, and when one vastly outweighs the other, it changes how your body processes both.

Modern diets — heavy in vegetable oils, processed foods, and grain-fed products — tend to be extremely high in omega-6 relative to omega-3. Many people are eating a ratio far more skewed than what the body evolved to handle, often without any awareness that the imbalance exists.

Why "I take fish oil" isn't the same as "I'm balanced"

This is the part that surprises people. Taking an omega-3 supplement adds omega-3 to the equation — but it doesn't automatically fix the ratio, especially if the rest of the diet is still heavily skewed toward omega-6. You can be consistent with a fish oil supplement and still carry a significantly imbalanced ratio, because the supplement is only one side of a two-sided equation.

This is why a ratio — not just an omega-3 number — is the more complete picture. A ratio tells you the relationship between the two, not just whether one number went up.

How would you actually find out your ratio?

The only reliable way is testing — a simple at-home blood spot test that reports your personal omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, rather than guessing based on diet alone or assuming a supplement is "handling it."

From there, the approach is straightforward: test, make simple adjustments to diet and supplementation based on what the number actually shows, then retest later to see whether the ratio actually moved. Not a guess. Not a general population average. Your own number, twice, with real time in between.
