Once someone decides they want to know their omega-3 status rather than guess at it, the next question is usually practical: how does this actually work? It's simpler than most people expect.
A 2025 global omega-3 study — the largest of its kind, covering 595,480 samples — used dried blood spot analysis: a small finger-prick sample collected at home, air-dried, and shipped to a lab. The researchers specifically note that this method "offers a practical and cost-effective assessment method," and that it correlates well with more traditional red blood cell-based measures.
Rather than a single omega-3 number in isolation, the more useful measurement is your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio — the relationship between the two fatty acid families, since they compete for some of the same processes in the body. A ratio gives more context than an omega-3 level alone, because it shows not just how much omega-3 you have, but how it compares to the omega-6 side of the equation. The 2025 study used this same ratio as one of its primary measures, alongside total omega-3 levels.
The study's authors chose a 120-day window specifically because it approximates the natural lifespan of red blood cells — meaning a test taken at that point reflects genuine, sustained change in your fatty acid profile, not short-term fluctuation from a single meal or a few days of different habits.
The result becomes your baseline. From there: make specific, informed adjustments — diet changes, supplementation, or both — over a defined period, then retest at 120 days. The second test tells you whether those changes actually moved the ratio, rather than leaving you to guess based on how you feel.
